1479926 Monitoring density electrically HAUNI-WERKE KORBER & CO KG 27 Aug 1974 [30 Aug 1973 20 Dec 1973] 37350/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division A2C] The tobacco density in the ends of cigarettes is measured by conveying the cigarettes at right angles to their axes past at least two capacitor electrodes which are stationary with respect to the cigarettes and are connected to a source of high frequency voltage. The electrodes may be disposed on opposite sides of the cigarettes or may all be opposite an end-face thereof. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, cigarettes Z are carried in a drum conveyer between capacitor plates 57, 58. A detector arrangement 71, 72 indicates when a cigarette is between the plates by triggering a gate circuit 74. The gate circuit causes an evaluation arrangement 61 to transmit a signal representing the tobacco density to a threshold value member 76. If this signal is below a value representing the minimum acceptable quantity of tobacco then member 76 emits a fault signal. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, measurement is made on three-layer blocks of 20 cigarettes. Three pairs of electrodes 357a, 358a, 357b, 358b, 357c, 358c are provided, one pair corresponding to each layer. Three timing discs 394a, b, c cooperate with detectors 372a, b, c to cause transmission of an evaluation signal from a circuit 361a to a threshold member 376a. If the latter emits a signal a pneumatically operated slide ejects the entire block. In a third embodiment an arrangement similar to that of Fig. 2 is provided with means for correctly positioning a cigarette relative to the electrodes. Also in this embodiment some of the circuit components are located in a temperature controlled chamber to suppress drift phenomena swing the temperature fluctuation. |
