1479937 Gasifying carbonaceous material FOSTER WHEELER CORP 24 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 32647/74 Heading C5E A process for gasifying a carbonaceous material comprises the steps of (a) gasifying a liquid hydrocarbon fuel by partial oxidation with an oxygen-containing gas in a generator 11, to produce a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, (b) mixing this gaseous mixture with a relatively cool, finely divided carbonaceous solid material delivered through a standpipe 12 (c) passing the gas/solid mixture, together with a carbonaceous feed material into a high velocity transfer line reactor 13 where the contact time of the feed and gas/solid mixture is 0À05-5 seconds to gasify the carbonaceous feed, the ratio of solid material to feed being at least 5 : 1, and (d) separating the solid material from the mixture obtained in the reactor to provide a high B.T.U. (greater than 400) gaseous product. The solid material separated from the gas/solid mixture is cooled in the solids cooler 14 and recycled to the solids standpipe 12. The gaseous mixture from the partial oxidation generator 11 has a temperature of 2000-3000‹ F and is cooled by contact with the solid carbonaceous material to 1500-2000‹ F., the temperature of the carbonaceous material being adjusted in the cooler 14 to give this temperature drop on mixing. The gaseous products obtained after separation of the solids are quenched, before leaving the solids cooler 14, to a temperature of 1000-1200‹ F. by the injection of cold quench liquor, and pass from cooler 14 to a separator 16 for the removal of high-boiling materials, through heat exchangers 18, 19 for further cooling (to # 300‹ F.) and to a quench tower 17 where final cooling to 100‹ F. occurs. Gas from the quench tower is passed to a conventional gas purification stage to remove acid gases, and may be methanated. The carbonaceous feed may be oil residues, natural gas, or waste oils. |
