1479652 Ziegler polymerization catalyst IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 04574/74 Heading C3P Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) at least one solid compound of a transition metal of Groups IVA to VIA which has been modified by grinding with a Lewis Base, (2) at least one organometallic compound of Group IA or IIA or of aluminium, (3) a polyene, and optionally (4) a Lewis Base. The polymers are 3-methyl-heptatriene-1,4,6- or cyclooctatriene, cyclooctatetraene, cycloheptatriene or substituted derivatives thereof, e.g. tropylium salts, tropolones or tropones. The Lewis Bases ground in (1) or present as (4) may be amines, amides, ureas, thioureas, organophosphorus compounds, ethers, esters, ketones, alcohols, or thio-analogues thereof, or, for component (4) silanes or siloxanes. The specific phosphorus compounds used in Specifications 1,383,207, 1,423,658, 1,423,659 1,423,660, 1,429,242 and 1,427,842 are particularly referred to as suitable Lewis bases. Examples refer to the polymerization of proppylene in bulk, in heptane or in the gas phase using a bed of polypropylene in the presence of hydrogen and of (1) TiCl 3 or TiCl 3 .¢AlCl 3 ground with hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPT) or pentamethyl - # - dimethylaminoethyl - phosphoric triamide (PDEPT), (2) AlEt 3 or Et 2 AlCl, (3) cycloheptatriene, and in some cases (4) HMPT, PDEPT, octamethylpyrophosphoramide, tetramethylethylene diamine (TMED) or 2-dimethylamino-1,3-dimethyl - 1,3 - diazo - 2- phospholidine - 2- oxide or a mixture of HMPT and TMED. In a comparative procedure components (1) to (4) are all present but the TiCl 3 of component (a) is not ground with the Lewis Base.
