1479913 Surface sizing paper BASF AG 14 Nov 1974 [15 Nov 1973] 49251/74 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] Paper is surface-sized by impregnation with an aqueous solution containing 0.1 to 5% by weight of a salt of a random copolymer of a) a C 2-12 α-olefin, b) acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, and optionally a third monomer; and 0.1 to 20% by weight of a compound of formula:- where R is H, alkyl, aryl or -NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> and R' and R<SP>2</SP> are each H, alkyl, hydroxymethyl or alkoxymethyl or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together are ethylene or proyplene. The solution may also contain an iron (III) and/or aluminium (III) salt. The preferred copolymer is a copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid. The third monomer may be selected from acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, C 1-4 alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl esters of C 2-4 alkanoic acids and vinyl chloride. Starch, or a derivative thereof, may be included in the aqueous solution. |
