1448988 (Dicarboxy) alkyl ethers UNILEVER Ltd 7 Dec 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 56514/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] (Dicarboxy) alkyl ethers of formula in which R 1 = H, -CH 3 or -COOM, R 2 = H, -CH 3 , or -COOM, R 3 = H, -CH 2 COOM or n = 0 or 1, m = 0, 1 or 2, M = H, -CH 3 , -C 2 H 5 or an alkali metal provided that R 2 may only be -COOM when R 1 = -COOM; when n = 0, R 3 must be -CH 2 COOM or but R 3 may only be -CH 2 COOM when R 1 = R 2 = H and m = 0 and further provided that n may only be 1 when m = 1, are prepared by reacting the relevant hydroxy compound with a diazomalonic or succinic ester in the presence of copper powder at 100‹ C. followed by hydrolysis. Compounds may be tartaric acid, propylene and triethylene glycol dimalonyl ethers; ethylene, propylene, diethylene glycol disuccinyl ethers; propylene, ethylene and diethylene glycol monosuccinyl ethers; and ethylene glycol monoacetyl monomalonyl ether, and examples describe the preparation of the sodium salts and their use as builders in detergent compositions with conventional additives.
