1,204,825. Fabric-plastics film laminate. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 June, 1969 [22 July, 1968], No. 34864/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] A flexible laminate comprises a plastics film at least 0À003 inch thick, bonded to a non- woven bonded fabric of natural or synthetic fibres or a mixture thereof, the fabric being of a weight not exceeding 0À5/d times the weight of an equal area of the plastics film, where d is the specific gravity of the film. Specified plastics are polyethylene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. The fabric may be formed from bicomponent fibres, e.g. of nylon-6 and nylon-6: 6, of nylon and polypropylene, of polypropylene and polythene or polythene and polyethylene terephthalate, the fibres being preferably oriented and in the form of continuous filaments or staple fibres which are optionally crimped. Bonding of the fabric is preferably effected by heat, optionally following the deposition of a thermoplastic bonding agent. Bonding of the film to the fabric may be effected by heat or by an adhesive, e.g. rubber, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, a polyamide or a blend of butyl rubber and polyisobutene, optionally under pressure. Alternatively, the film may be extruded on to the fabric or contacted therewith in the form of a lay flat tube. Examples are given. The laminates may be used in the manufacture of packaging sacks. |
