Analgesic compositions comprise (i) a 3- or 4-phenoxyphenylalkanoic acid of the formula: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein (a) the phenoxy moiety is in the 3- position and R3 is methyl or ethyl and R4 is hydrogen, or (b) the phenoxy moiety is in the 4-position, R3 is hydrogen or methyl and when R3 is hydrogen R4 is hydrogen, fluoro, ethyl, methyl or methoxy and when R3 is methyl R4 is hydrogen, and (ii) an ester of 1, 2-diphenyl-2-hydroxy-3-methyl-4-(substituted) aminobutane or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof having the formula: wherein R 1 is methyl or ethyl and R 2 is dimethylamino or pyrrolidino. The composition preferably contains α-d-propoxyphene napsylate or hydrochloride and 2-(3-[or 4]-phenoxyphenyl) propionic acid. The phenoxyphenyl compound may be in the form of the Na, K, Ca, Mg, ammonium or benzylammonium salts and α-d-propoxyphene may be in the form of its hydrochloride, hydrobromide, sulphate, bisulphate, acetate, valerate, oleate, phenate, laurate, borate, benzoate, lactate, phosphate, tosylate, citrate, maleate, fumarate, succinate, tartrate or napsylate. The compositions may be administered orally as tablets, pills, powders, granules, capsules, emulsions, solutions, suspensions, syrups or elixirs; parenterally in the form of sterile aqueous or non-aqueous solutions, suspensions or emulsions; or rectally as suppositories. The compositions may contain additional active ingredients such as acetyl salicylic acid.
