A punch paper tape for e.g. controlling the Jacquard mechanism of a circular knitting machine includes a series of wheels which rotate and around which the paper tape advances in a spiral path. Associated with each wheel is a punching element operated to produce a punched hole corresponding to a particular colour yarn. The wheels are rotationally indexed to advance the paper tape and during the periods in which the wheels are stationary the punching elements are actuated according to a control program to produce holes in the paper tape. The punched paper tape is automatically produced and subsequent decoding is avoided.
