The method consists of progressively varying the circuit impedance during lamp operation. To do this it is sufficient to divide the total impedance into two or more impedance and to insert them in circuit at different times. The increase in arc voltage is much less than that due to the added impedance. A time delay between each impedance gives the lamp time to reduce, after a small instantaneous addition increases its arc voltage. This lowers the value with respect to the initial position and extinction is avoided. A lamp having an arc voltage of the order of 135 volts. increases by instantaneous amounts to 150 volts. or more if the added impedance is such that the power reduction required is 20% to 30%. The circuit for power reduction is designed to permit its location in the lamps housing.
|
