<p>The expandable or dilatable girdle (c) for multi-wire or strand suspension bridge cables may be deployed in the maintenance of cable-binding collars. In the vicinity of terminal collars, where the wires fan out ot anchorage, the girdle may be used to draw the wires (a) together, distressing the collar, and permitting its removal for inspection. The girdle (c) comprises a supply tendon which is wound round the diverging wires (a). One extremity of the tendon is taken to anchorage (e) and the other attached to a jack (d). Tension applied by the jack causes the girdle to dilate. Once the collar is removed jack relaxation causes the girdle to expand, and the wires to open for maintenance inspection.</p> |
