1492084 Electrical connectors BUNKER RAMO CORP 30 Sept 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 40000/75 Heading H2E An electrical connector comprises a first connector part 16 having a first contact 18 and a protective wall 22 of insulating material spaced therefrom, and a second connector part 20 that has a second connector 62 and a guide wall 64 of insulating material provided with a projecting portion which, upon mating of the two parts 16, 20 is received in a projection receiving portion of the protective wall 22 of part 16. The mating produces a biasing force which tends to maintain the projection within the receiving portion. As described, the connector is of the patch cord type wherein the second connector part 20, a male connector as shown, is releasably mated with a plurality of first, female, connector parts 16 that are carried by a mounting plate 12. The contacts 18 of parts 16 are exposed on one side of the plate 12 for permanent connection, the other end being protected within an insulating housing. Each female part 16 has a single connector 18 that is bifurcated at its mating end, each male part 20 having a plurality of connectors 62 that are shielded on one side by the guide wall 64 and are separated from each other by intermediate ribs 68. The guide wall 64 extends between adjacent rows of upper housing portions 22 of female parts 16, is provided with a plurality of ramp type projections 90, 92 which snap into respective recesses or bores 98, 100 in parts 16 during mating thereof. Each part 20 has a recess portion 58 provided with an aperture 54 for receiving a tool for disengaging parts 16, 20. As may be seen in Fig. 3, the crosssectional shape of upper housing portions 22 of first parts 16 is such as to accommodate the intermediate and end ribs 68, 66, 70. The insertion of contacts 38 into the housing of the female part during manufacture produces housing deformation at the under side of the plate 12<SP>1</SP> so as to retain the housing within its aperture 14 in the plate 12. The mating parts of the housings of parts 16, 20 may be of nylon in order to allow resilient yielding of projections 90, 92. |
