Electrically heated domestic hot water cylinder - has ambient air heat pump to supplement electric heating

Domestic water cylinder (2) contained in an outer insulated casing (1), has an electric heating element (6) in its base. Within the same outer casing is a heat pump which has an air heated evaporator (16) positioned above the water cylinder (2). The casing has inlet and discharge openings (17,18) for the air flow and an air circulating fan (19) above the cylinder. The refrigerant is piped to a compressor in the base of the casing (1) below the water cylinder and then passes to a condenser (20) in the form of a coil round the electric heater. The air flow over the evaporator can be connected in a ducted extractor system from the kitchen or utility room containing the hot water cylinder.
