<p>Ethylene polymers for films, having excellent optical props. and a small fraction which can be extracted with hexane, and prepd. in a high pressure tubular reactor in the presence of a chain transfer agent and several radical inductors. In this process, the reactor has a length (L)/dia. (I) ratio >1000, the length of the reactor (in metres) between the point in the reactor where the induction temp. of a first org. radical inductor is reached and the point in the reactor where the max. temp. of the second org. radical inductor is attained, satisfying the equation. L >=0.9739(W2/D)1/3 (where W is the pumping rate of monomer in kg/hr; D is the internal dia. in cms. of the reactor tube). The polymsn. is effected in the tubular reactor in the presence of inductors including O2, an org. radical initiator, at 123 degrees C for 10 hours, and a second org. radical inductor at >133 degrees C for 10 hrs. Good conversion of monomer to polymer is obtd. and the ethylene may be homo- or co-polymsd. The prodts. are used in insulating compsns. for electric cables and wires having good rhetorical props. and resistance to cracking under load.</p> |
