The distance between the gun and the workpiece in a plasma arc cutting device is automatically controlled by the arc voltage value, stored as reference in a memory when a stable arc has been established. The subsequent actual arc voltage is constantly compared in a comparator with the stored reference voltage. Any difference is converted to an output signal for the gun height control motor. This is a more accurate control than that obtainable by a capacitive control. Water, used for silencing, cannot affect the control by altering the capacitance.
