1479236 Embossed foam coated sheet materials GAF CORP 13 Oct 1975 [30 Dec 1974] 41863/75 Heading B2E A sheet material, e.g. a floor covering, has an embossed surface and comprises a substrate, e.g. asbestos, a non woven or woven fibrous web, a plastisol layer or a plastisol on felt wacking, a pigmented layer and a foamed plastics layer adhered to the pigmented layer, the foamed layer having selectively crushed transparent portions through which the pigmented layer is visible. Preferably a clear cured wear layer is included over the foamed layer. A method of making such material comprises forming a 2 to 20 mil thick pigmented layer of wet PVC plastisol or organosol, which may contain a blowing agent, on a latex coated felt substrate, heating to gel the layer, applying a 4 to 20 mil thick wet non-pigmented layer of foamable PVC plastisol or organosol over the pigmented layer, heating to gel this layer, printing the gelled layer, applying a 40 to 20 mil thick wear layer of PVC plastisol or organosol to the printed layer and heating to gel and cure the wear layer and foam the foamable layer or layers. Portions of the sheet are then selectively crushed by embossing. A further foamable layer may be applied to the substrate before applying the pigmented layer. Titanium dioxide is a suitable pigment. |
