As shown a four-lane sunken roadway 6 is covered by a grid 1' supported on columns 11 and comprising slats 2 of sound-absorbing material which attenuate and deflect vehicle noise to screen buildings 7, the slats running longitudinally of the road and defining constant or different-width openings 3. The roof structure also includes walkways 12. The slats may be of fibre-based material supported on horizontal wire lattices, Figs. 3-6 (not shown), or on perforated metal sheets, the upper edges of the slats being weather proofed.
