In a device comprising a plurality of cells with figure of eight arrays pulse trains AT 10 , AT 40 of Œ 12V are applied sequentially to the common electrode of each cell and pulse trains S 2 , S 1 of Œ 6V are applied to selected and non-selected electrodes of the arrays. The waveforms applied to these electrodes are KD 10 ... KD n . Pulses S 2 are 180 degrees out of phase with pulses AT; pulses S 2 are in phase. Thus when a common electrode and an array electrode are selected pulses of Œ 18V are applied whilst in half select and non-select cases pulses of Œ 6V are always provided. The driving circuitry includes a 4 digit shift register (X) Fig. 3 (not shown), storage buffer (X' 1 ), a decoder (DC), a timer (TC) producing pulses T 1 ... T 4 , a signal generator (SG) producing signals S 1 , S 2 and drivers (AT m ), (KD n ) producing signals AT mo , KD no . Drivers (AT m ) include MOS and bipolar transistors. They first convert the two value signal S 1 to a three value signal O 1 and then amplify this to ATmo.
