Polyesters and cellulose esters are dyed or printed with disperse dyes in the presence of a phthalimide compound of the formula I in which R 1 is an alkyl group optionally substituted by halogen, hydroxy, acyloxy, carboxy, or alkoxycarbonyl, containing altogether 1-8 carbon atoms, the carbon chain of which may be interrupted by oxygen, R 2 is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, C 1-4 alkoxy, carboxy, C 1-4 alkoxycarbonyl, nitro or phenyl group. Emulsifying and dispersing agents of the ionic or non-ionic type may be present as may dyeing carriers, e.g. 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzoic acid methyl ester. |
