<p>1498168 Motorcycle rear wheel suspensions; transmissions COMPANIA ESPANOLA DE MOTORES SA 13 April 1976 [1 May 1975] 15113/76 Headings B7H and B7E A motorcycle has a rear wheel 16 suspended by upper and lower links 19, 21 defining an instantaneous centre of suspension rotation 27, and a chain drive which includes a first chain 34 encircling a gearbox output sprocket 31 and an idler sprocket 32 mounted on the frame 12 of motorcycle, and a second chain 36 which encircles a sprocket 35 on the rear wheel 16 and a second idler sprocket co-axial with the idler sprocket 32, the idler sprockets being located at the intersection of lines 38 connecting the axis of the rear wheel 16 with the instantaneous centre 27 under full jounce and rebound conditions and any intermediate condition so that changes in tension of the chain 36 during suspension movements are avoided. The line of action of the upper run of the chain 36 passes below the instantaneous centre 27 to provide an anti-squat force when the motorcycle is accelerated, and line of action of the lower run passes above the instantaneous centre 27 to provide a pro-lift force when decelerating.</p> |
