Casting pipe used between tundish and mould - where pipe has refractory lining which glazes when heated

Device for casting metals, using a casting pipe located between a tundish and another vessel or mould in which the bottom end of the pipe dips under the melt. The pipe consists of metal reinforcement coated with thermal insulation based on inorganic refractory particles in an organic and/or inorganic binder; and the coating forms at least a surface glaze when the molten metal runs through the pipe. The casting pipe is pref. sealed on the base of the tundish, and the coating may be on the inside and/or the outside of the metal reinforcement. The coating pref. has compsn. by wt 70-90% refractory particles, e.g. SiO2 and/or Al2o3; 0-20% synthetic or natural organic cpds. present as grains and/or fibres; 0-20% mineral fibres; 2-10% organic and/or mineral and/or plant binders; 0-10% flux, e.g. alkali(ne earth) oxides. The compsn. pref. has density 0.3-1.6 kg./dm.3 and starts to glaze at 600 degrees C. The metal reinforcement may consist of perforated sheet or a grid and can be assembled from several rings. Prevents the formation of splashes or spray and the cooling of the molten metal stream.
