A chain driven by a toothed pinion transmits power to a toothed gear wheel. The teeth of the pinion have the driving side face machined at an angle to the radius through the base of the tooth recess sufficiently large to ensure that the reaction between the tooth and the chain roller has a component tending to push the roller radially out of the tooth space. The teeth of the wheel have the driven side face machined at a second angle to the radius sufficiently large to have a similar effect. As the chain rollers wear, they move radially outwards on both pinion and wheel and thus automatically take up the slack resulting from wear.
|
