The carburettor (1) is supplied by a pump from a fuel tank. A greater amount of fuel is passed through the carburettor than is absorbed by the air flowing through it and the excess is returned to the fuel line (3) between the tank and the pump. The excess fuel collects in a receiving chamber (10) in the carburettor and flows by gravity from this into a buffer cylinder (8). This has an internal cylinder (17) with perforated sides through which the fuel flows. The outlet (7) of the internal cylinder leads into the fuel pipe at the appropriate point (6). A float (18) within the internal cylinder closes the outlet when the buffer is empty and thus ensures a constant adequate head at the return connection.
