The advantages of this piston ring design are that it improves gas sealing and reduces oil consumption in any piston driven engine. These are ached by making the face (10) of the ring in contact with the cylinder wall (4) concave. The concavity may take the form of a shallow curve or may be derived from the intersection, on the ring median plane, of two shallow angled cones. In either case, the upper edge (7) of the ring provides a good gas seal when the piston is rising in the bore and the lower edge (8) scavenges the oil from the cylinder wall when the piston is falling. The ring is otherwise similar to a standard piston ring, having parallel sides (5, 6) fitting closely in a groove in the piston (3).
|
