In producing TiCl 4 by suspending titaniferous ore and carbonaceous reducing agent in dilute phase in chlorine gas, there are maintained in the reaction zone, a solid charge density of 4-10 lbs. /cu. ft., a gas velocity of 8-40 ft./sec. and a temperature of 850-1300‹ C. At least 80% of the ore is of - 60 to + 200 mesh and at least 70% of the reducing agent (preferably coke) is of - 20 to + 60 mesh. The ore preferably contains 45-98% TiO 2 . As shown in the Figure, ore and coke enter at 15, are mixed with circulating solids at 6 and pass to reactor 1. Chlorine enters at 14 and TiCl 4 leaves at 10. Oxygen may be supplied at 13 to burn some coke to provide heat for start-up or to maintain the heat balance. |
