[Also in Division F2] Different parts of a rolling contact bearing are constructed of different materials, the materials being so hardened and prestressed by heat treatment that the internal end surfaces stresses developed in the materials by the heat treatment, will counteract the stresses resulting from mounting and service conditions of the parts involved, in order to minimize fatigue stress effects in the parts. An outer race of the bearing is made from core hardened carbon steel so that the traction stresses resulting from the hardening process counteract the compression stresses resulting from the fitting and loading of the race. The inner race is made from case hardened cementation steel so that the compression stresses resulting from the hardening process counteract the tensile stresses resulting from the filling and loading of the race. To counteract compression stresses and microweld formation between the rolling members, e.g. balls or rollers, and the inner race, the rolling members are made from core hardened carbon steel. |
