The wheel rim is made up of three or more segments joined at profiled butt joints formed by angled edges. The edges are shaped so that the tyre, when inflated holds the segments together with distortion. One of the butt joints has a wedge shaped gap (17) on the inside sections of the wall. This allows some relative tilting of the segments to enable the tyre to be stretched over the rim. The wedge apex is at or below the level of the wheel rim base (10) to ensure that no dirt and grit is worked into the space between the tyre wall and the rim, which would reduce the lift of the tyre.
|
