The pulses change the state of a counter. A control line transmits from an operating point the counter content as control signal, together with an address to a selectable unit. A signalling line transmits from the selected unit a message giving its operational state, together with an address. Before the state of the counter (4) is changed by pulses of the increment generator (3), the existing state of the unit is written into the counter (4) through the signalling line (1).
