Low-foaming disinfectant and cleaning compsns. contain ethers of formula: R-O-(X.O)-nC(CH3)3 (I), pref. at 0.5-20 wt.% (where R= 6-22C alk(en)yl; X= 2-3C alkylene; n=5-50). Active disinfectant component, pref. used at 0.5-10 wt. %, is either a quat. cpd. of formula R1R2R3R4+N Y- (R1 and R2 = (m)ethyl; R3 and R4= 8-18C alk(en)yl, or benzyl; Y- = halo or CH3OSO3-), or trichloroisocyanuric acid. (I) are effective foam suppressants for cationic and nonionic cpds.; are stable in alkaline soln. and in presence of caustic alkali, and have excellent surfactant props.
