In installations having high-power DC loads which are supplied via converters, for example DC drives in rolling mills, high reactive powers occur which cause an additional stress on the supplying three-phase network. Until now, static reactive converters (B) have been used in conjunction with capacitors (K), for example, in order to compensate for the reactive power. On the basis of this, it is proposed to use the converters (A, B; E, F), which are used for DC loads (M) anyway, to improve the reactive power consumption from the network. For this purpose, the required value of the converter which is operating as a reactive power converter (B), or the circulating current in converter circuits (E, F) in which there is a circulating current is controlled in such a manner that the primary of the transformer (T1; T2) which supplies the converters (A, B; E, F) absorbs an essentially constant reactive power. <IMAGE>
