Appts. for spinning yarn by an open-end spinning process has an integral electric motor and a floating bearing to support the centre of gravity of the rotor. The rotary parts of the open-end spinner are so constructed that the moment of inertia of the rotating assembly is greater round the rotary axis than the moment of inertia along a vertical axis. The design allows operating speeds of 30,000-100,000 rpm, with min. wear, and allows hardened steel or other abrasion-resistant materials to replace Al and reduce the moving mass of the rotor assembly as the component size can be reduced.
