The novel cationic dyes are of formula (I): (where R=H, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl; R1=H, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl, providing that at least one of R and R1 is 2-4C hydroxyalkyl; An(-) is an anion; the cyclic and acyclic radicals may contain non-ionic substituents). Used as fast blue dyes for polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene cyanide, acid-modified polyesters or polyamides. Also for dyeing and printing lignin-contg. fibres, leather, paper, tanned cotton; for printing inks. In an example, 4-Bromo-N-ethylnaphtholactam and N-beta-acetoxyethyl-2:2:4-trimethyl-tetrahydroquinoline are condensed to give a cpd. (I).
