<p>IC engine exhaust gas silencer is of the conventional absorption type but has the casing (3) made in at least 2 parts (11,12) with peripheral flanges (13,14) and embodying a length of the central pipe (7,8). The parts are completely enamelled, except for the end of the central pipe which is threaded externally to take a coupling sleeve (10). When the silencer is assembled a joint is made between the flanges in such a way as to avoid damage to the enamel, by rolling a sleeve (15), pref. of alloy steel, around the outside. Sealing can be improved by a layer of softer material, e.g. copper, between sleeve and flanges, or by a gasket of heat-and corrosion-resistant material between the flange faces. The faces of the flanges may be ground flat.</p> |
