In small machines studs or bolts for retaining the endplate may be replaced by deformable metal strips (5). These are permanently attached to the stator (1) where, by spot welding at each end, they may also serve to clamp the laminations. The ends (12) of the strip are initially bent outwards (18) to permit placing the endplate in position. The assembly sequence is then to bend the end straight, and subsequently to bend (19) the outer end over the endplate (3). The endplate has slots or notches (13) into which the end of the strip fits to give circumferential positioning. The notch base is also above that of the general diameter of the endplate so that by bending the strip over the end of the notch (20) an axial clamping force is exerted.
