摘要 1478116 Assembling terminals on circuit boards ELCO CORP 10 June 1974 [8 June 1973] 25581/74 Headings B3A and B3U An apparatus for inserting terminals 34 into a circuit board 28 comprises a first guide channel 119, Fig. 9, through which is fed a U-shaped strip 101 carrying terminals 34, a ram assembly 30 for removing a terminal 34 from the strip and inserting it into the board 28 and a second guide channel 120, Fig. 12, for guiding the strip, devoid of terminals, away from the ram assembly 30. The terminals 34 are mounted in slots in a U-section polyester strip 101, which is advanced between a reel (37) (Fig. 3, not shown) and a sprocket 38 via pulleys 50, 51 and the guide channels 119, 120. The first guide channel 119 leading to the ram assembly 30 is provided with guide surfaces for the strip and attached terminals 34 and the second guide channel 120 leading away from the ram assembly 30 is provided with guide surfaces for guiding the base of the U-section strip and the upper of the two strip legs which have been deformed by the ram assembly 30. An aperture in the board 28 which is to receive a terminal 34 is correctly located beneath the ram end 178, Fig. 10A, by engaging the aperture with a spring biased finger (76) (Fig. 4, not shown) of an anvil assembly 32 below the circuit board 28, the operation being facilitated by a light source 74. The circuit board 28 is clamped by clamps 70 to adjustable beams 64 of a jig 26. If the finger (76) is not properly located in the aperture, the finger (76) is depressed against spring bias (82) causing contacts (92, 96) to disengage which prevents operation of the ram assembly 30. When a pair of switches 77 are simultaneously pressed, the ram 30 is moved downwards by a fluid cylinder 42 between the two guide channels 119, 120 to cause a terminal 34 to be received in an opening in the ram end 178, defined by a flexible gripping insert 184, and the strip legs to be deflected. The other end of the terminal 34 is resiliently engaged by spring biased jaws (158, 160) (Fig. 13, not shown) to produce uniform deflection of the strip legs and to maintain alignment of the terminal 34. Upon further movement of the ram 30, the terminal 34 is press fitted into the aperture in the board 28. Thereafter, the strip is advanced to bring the next terminal 34 beneath the ram 30 by disengaging one of two alternately operable fingers (200, 202) (Fig. 6, not shown) from an indexing hole in the base of the strip and engaging it with the other finger, the strip being advanced during this interval by the sprocket 38 which is continuously driven.
