In the embodiment of Fig. 3, light from each element of pattern 11, which is attached round rotatable drum 12, is split by prism 15 into a spectral bands separated by slits in plate 16. Photo-electric converter 17 provides electric signals corresponding to the transmittance or reflectance, compared in comparator 18 with reference signals from memory 19 so that, according to whether the signal from 17 is within a certain magnitude range, a signal of 0 or 1 is produced for each colour band of each element. This range may be between constant magnitudes or constant fractions of the transmittance or reflectance, Converter 20 forms a colour code applied by output 21 to a pattern forming system. The apparatus may provide information for only a single colour for printing cloth. Control circuit 13 develops a synchronizing signal for items 12 and 18-21.
