A railway freight car has at each side slidable doors 1, 2, Fig. 1, a roof portion 7 and a roof member 6, the latter being raisable by lever mechanisms 13, 14 on each sliding door 1, and thereafter displaceable horizontally with the doors 1 over the roof portion 7. The member 6 has at each side a flange (10), Fig. 5 (not shown), which normally rests on an upper horizontal beam (5) connected at (11) to a rail 3 on which run rollers 4 for the doors (1), 2. The member (6) is held in the lowered position at each side by latch members (24), (25) on an upper horizontal shaft (26) mounted on the beam (5), the member (24) being unlatched by operating a handle (28) connected to a rod (27) pivoted at its upper end to the member (24). Each lever mechanism 13, 14 comprises a vertical rod 15 slidable in guides 19 on the door 1 and operable by a pivotal lever 16. When lifted the upper end of the rod 15 is formed to engage an eave (23) of the member 6. In the raised position the member 6 is movable with the door 1. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown), the roof member when raised and in its displaced position above the roof portion is secured laterally, longitudinally and vertically thereon, whereby to prevent removal, e.g. by a gust of wind. Flanges on one part are engageable in grooves on the other part. The roof portion 7 is also slidable on the car. |
