摘要 1439346 Epitaxial growth PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Oct 1973 [7 Oct 1972 26 April 1973 [10 Sept 1973] 46375/73 Heading BIS [Also in Division G4] A monocrystalline layer of a magneto-optical rare earth bismuth iron garnet is grown by liquid epitaxy on a crystallographic surface with a melt consisting of a rare earth bismuth iron garnet nutrient dissolved in a flux at a temperature below 950‹C. The nutrient content of the melt may be e.g. 5-14 mol. % and the nutrient may contain an excess of Bi; preferably up to 60% of the rare-earth metal sites in the monocrystalline layer are occupied by Bi. The monocrystalline layer may be 0.1-10 pm thick. Examples of fluxes used are BaO and PbO-B 2 O 3 mixtures and in both cases some of the rare-earth metal sites become occupied by Ba and Pb respectively. The preferred crystallographic surface is Gd 3-x Sm x Gu 5 O 12 where O # x# 3. The metals Lu, Yd, Tm and En may also be added to the melt to obtain a layer of garnet having an extra high Bi content or suitable substrates e.g. Nd 3 Ga 5 O 12 and Sm 3 Ga 5-x In x O 12 where 2 > x > 0.
