Preparation of aldehydes of the gen. formula: (where R' is 1-9C alkyl or 2-9C alkenyl; R2 and R3 are H or methyl, R4 and R6 are H or 1-6C alkyl group; and R5 is H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C alkenyl. A secondary alkyl alcohol of corresponding formula is treated with an aldehydic ether (IIIa) or an acetal (IIIb) where R and R' are 1-4C alkyl groups in the presence of an acid catalyst. |
