The material which is to be sifted into fine and coarse particles is fed into the inlet and flung radially outwards by the blades of the rotating wheel (3). Air from the circumferential duct is blown radially inwards. The heavier particles are less affected by the air blast and fall through the annular space into the hopper. The lighter particles are blown through small holes and passage-ways in the hub (8) and out through another duct. The pressure drop through the holes and passage-ways is arranged to be equal to the pressure drop across the inlet blades. This arrangement increases the sifting efficiency.
