1477596 Extrusion-calendering apparatus WERNER & PFLEIDERER 23 Oct 1975 [11 Dec 1974] 43543/75 Heading B5A An extruder nozzle 6 which discharges material 9 from an opening 11 into the nip 4 of a pair of sheet or film calendering rollers 1, 2, comprises a downstream face 14 in which is provided at least one cavity 10 extending upwardly from the lower edge of the opening 11 with increasing cross-sectional area and serving to accumulate any excess material being delivered from the opening 11 into the roller nip 4. The cavity is respectively triangular and rectangular in plans perpendicular to the axis of the rollers 1, 2, and of the extruders. In the embodiment, the lateral boundaries of the nip 4 are defined by members 7 between each of which and the opening 11 a cavity 10 is located. The height 12 of material in a cavity 10, or in both cavities, may be sensed by a mechanical or optical scanning device 13, which controls the extruder in dependency on the sensed height e.g. to adjust the speed of rotation of the worm if the material supply thereto is suddenly reduced.
