In a two-drum web-winding machine, a motor 17 drives both drums, the first drum 3 via a pulley and belt system 15, 16, and the second drum 4 via a pulley and belt system 20-22 and a differential gear 18. The speed of drum 4 is varied with respect to drum 3 with a brake acting on the third input of the differential ( e.g. on the casing thereof), the brake being controlled in accordance with the size of the web-roll being wound. In the embodiment, a pneumatically operated drum brake (32, Fig. 3) is connected to the casing of the differential gear - via sprocket and chain drive. The loading of the brake is controlled by a cam-operated valve 36. The cam 11 is rotated in accordance with the movement of the web-roll supports 7 on vertical guide faces 5a, 6a, this movement being transmitted to the cam by an endless chain 8 passing round several sprockets 9, 10, and connected to the support 7. As an alternative, the cam 11 may be operated by a follower member riding on top of the web-roll, and in place of the pneumatically operated brake, an hydraulic, electric or mechanical system may be used. |
