Heading C2U. 5#,6-Dihydrosteroids which are 3-unsubstituted or are substituted at position 3 by a hydroxy or oxo group are prepared from the correspondong #<SP>5</SP>-steroids by microbial reduction with enzymes of Eubacterium Nova ATCC 21408. A 3-oxo starting material yields a mixture of 3-oxo and 3-hydroxy products which may be separated chromatographically. Specified products are of the androstane, pregnane, cholestane, solanidane, spirostane and azaspirostane series. In the examples, a treatment under reflux with ethanolic KOH is effected subsequently to the microbial treatment.
