The outputs of electro-mechanical and contactless gauges measuring the diameter of plasticcovered cable issuing from an extruder are combined to correct changes in diameter by controlling the speed of draw-off means for the cable. As shown, plastic covered cable 10 issuing from an extruder 1, 2 is drawn off through a cooler 3 by a caterpillar track or belt 4. A signal from a differential type photo-electric diameter gauge immediately downstream of the extruder is amplified at 6 and time delayed at 7 for combination at 8 with a signal, from an inductive pick-off 13 associated with diameter gauging rolls 12, applied through a phase sensitive rectifier 14 and time delay unit 15. Any output from summer 8 is effective through an amplifier 9 to control a device 11 adjusting the rate of draw-off in such sense as to oppose changes in diameter.
