Underwater welding appts. uses elements which can be assembled round an underwater structure to form a stationary welding chamber in which the water is displaced by a gas. The chamber elements are provided with a pipe with >=1 inlet in the chamber above the gas-water interface; and the pipe is used for the removal of fumes created in the chamber during welding. The outlet(s) of the fume extn. pipe(s) are pref. above the chamber; and the portions of the pipes in the chamber may be flexible and connected to the workpiece by a magnet; each pipe pref. has a manual control valve. The chamber is pref. open at its base, an dused for manual arc welding, esp. with a coated electrode. Effected fume extn. is obtd. so that e.g. a diver can see the joint by looking through the chamber wall, which includes transparent zones.
|
