The mechanical winch has a built-in clutch and reverse gear. It has a single housing with a drive shaft on which two bevel gears (3, 4) turn freely, but cannot slide. A dog clutch (12) slides on a splined portion of the shaft (2) between the gears, to engage with one or the other of them. A groove (14) may be provided in the dog clutch to accommodate the prongs of a selector fork actuated from outside, while return springs are fitted between the housing and each fork face. The bevel gears can mesh with a horizontal bevel gear (5) on the vertical worm shaft (6) driving the winch drum (7), a dog clutch being provided between the worm wheel and the drum shaft (9).
