The introduction of the electro-pneumatic brake on European railways cannot be expected for some years yet. It is the object of the invention that the driver's brake valves usual hitherto need only be provided with a few additions in order to control pneumatic and electro-pneumatic brake devices. In this connection, the conversion of a compressed air pulse into an electrical pulse is used for actuation of the braking or release contacts (58, 60) of the electro-pneumatic brake. A solenoid valve device (88), actuatable by the pulse generator (30) by means of the driver's brake lever (14) produces an immediate, time-limited or volume-dependently limited reduction of the pilot pressure. The volume-dependent pressure reduction is achieved by an injection chamber (90), which is connected by the solenoid valve device (88) to a chamber (80) of a pressure sensing switch (56) controlling the pilot pressure. The reduction of the pilot pressure achieved must attain at least the threshold value of the relay valve (40). <IMAGE>
