Aromatic hydrocarbon modified pyrotechnic smoke compsn. - to produce smoke impenetrable by visible and infrared radiation

The pyrotechnic smoke compsn. contain C forming materials which on burning, by dispersion of a large amt. of finely divided C, absorb radiation in the near infra-red. Use of the compsns. results in the generation of smoke which is opaque to both visible light and to radiation in the near infra-red. They also have outstanding ground clinging properties. In an example a hexachlorethane/zn/ZnO smoke compsn. is modified by mixing with aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as their polymerisation, condensn. and decomposition prods. e.g. polystyrene, naphthol pitch, coal tar pitch.
