3-Methylpiperidine is obtained in a yield of up to 90 % if 2-methylglutaronitrile is hydrogenated under pressure in the presence of a nickel catalyst. 3-Methylpiperidine is used as a vulcanisation accelerator and additive to lubricating oils; it is further an intermediate for the preparation of nicotinic acid, which is of importance as a medicament and food additive.
