Substantial constancy of the elasticity modulus of draft twisted yarn in a cylindrical yarn package with tapered ends is obtained by regulating the winding-on tension such that only at the start and finish of the winding operation is the winding-on tension at the middle portion equal to that at the reversal points. During the winding of the first “ to ¢ (preferably 1/3) by weight of the package the difference between the winding on tension at the middle portion and that at the reversal points is continuously increased, and the difference is then continuously decreased until the finish of the winding operation. Either the winding-on tension at the cylindrical portion is maintained constant with the winding on tension at the reversal points varied, or vice versa, or else both winding on tensions are varied. The maximum difference between the winding on tensions is from 1/3 to 9/10, preferably ¢ to 4/5, of the winding-on yarn tension in the middle portion. The alteration of the winding on yarn tension is effected by varying the spindle speed and/or the drafting delivery speed. |
