Glass is subjected to chemical attack or polished by treating with an aq. soln. of HF contg. a dissolved wetting agent (I) which is resistant to acids. The mixt. can also contain H2SO4 or an inorganic acid fluoride and (I) is pref. a fluorinated anionic, cationic or nonionic surfactant used at 5-1000, esp. 50-300mg/l. Used for polishing or depolishing glass. Addn. of (I) reduces evaporative losses of HF and allows shorter treatment times and lower temps. The mixt. is more fluid and any particles of sludge adhering to the glass are easily rinsed off giving a better appearance. In an example, a soln. contg. 60% H2SO4, 10-15% HF and balance water was treated with 100mg/l. tetraethylammonium perfluorooctanesulphur to give a treating soln.
